The biggest trait we parents must instil in today’s children is tolerance and empathy; the ability to follow our own traditions and events without putting down or carrying hatred in our hearts for people belonging to other cultures and religions.
So how to make them understand our roots, our history and culture while explaining the reasoning behind other people’s traditions especially when it comes to events like Easter, Halloween or Christmas which Muslims do not celebrate.I have always been confused about this dilemma until I came across this post on Facebook. This is one of the most rational posts I have come across on explaining a non Muslim event to children.
I am guilty of the fact that during my first pregnancy, I joined babycenter, read lots of materials on healthy eating and baby rearing but ignored the Islamic aspect of raising children and pregnancy except for the few prayers which I recited during labour and which were indeed very helpful. I will keep those duas for a seperate post. For now, I am sharing these sunnahs I found really helpful especially the part about the soul entering the fetus and the part our prayers play in shaping it’s destiny. Try your best to follow these sunnahs for a God fearing, pious child

The sad thing about existing Pakistani society is that women belonging to the middle class are taught since school to achieve best grades, get into top universities and choose the most coveted professions: Medical or Engineering. Yet when it comes to choosing a life partner, all of a sudden they are asked to lower down their bars.
This extreme lowering of expectations from a life partner, I think, is the main cause of spousal incompatibility, resentment and regret.
This is the main crux of this piece on how to raise our daughters to set boundaries, be confident about themselves and put respect and kindness as a top priority in a relationship rather than materialistic benefits. I will ask you guys to read the whole article to understand what I am talking about.

Since this is winter time, a lot of toddlers suffer from colds and flu due to the chilly weather. In Australia, doctors hardly ever prescribe antibiotics until the condition is very critical. So it is better to have some home remedies handy especially when you have young children at home. These tips were provided by Fizza Khuhro. I am posting them as I have used these too and can vouch for their effectiveness for treating sore throat, common colds, flu and fever
1. Ajwain & Lashan Potli (Carom Seeds and Garlic Cloth Wrap)Roast ajwain (carom seeds) in a pot till brown(not black), add chopped garlic to it till its dry but not completely burnt. Take it off from the stove and wrap it in a malmal cloth (Light cotton cloth). This is called a potli in Urdu. Massage the chest and back with this potli. This relieves congestion and cough.
2. Vicks On The FeetApply Vicks on the feet and make the child wear socks. -this relieves cough.
3. Haldi Doodh (Milk With Turmeric)
For immunity, add half a cup of milk, a pinch of haldi (turmeric), a strand of safferon, one elaichi and boil. When done add a teaspoon of honey when it’s slightly cool and drink up. For mothers who don’t use fresh milk you can boil the mixture in water and then add formula after your done cooking it.
Note: I use milk and turmeric only and it works just fine.
4. Lashan and Sarson oil rub (Garlic and Mustard Oil Rub)
Heat sarson oil (Mustard oil) on the stove and add chopped garlic to it. Once you see the garlic get totally black, you take it off, strain and keep the oil aside. Warm it slightly before applying it on the chest and back. – relieves congestion and cough.
5. Steam / Nebulise
To ease the airways, either give steam or nebulise with normal saline with a cold mist.
Note: A tip my sister in law gave me for nebulising is to use a pressure cooker. Heat some water in it, let the steam build up and when you let go of the valve at the top and when the steam comes out, put your child in front of that steam. It will ease the clog in his nose/ears.Continue reading “These Fantastic Home Remedies Will Save Your Toddler From The Common Cold”

However when the time came and I got quotations from some event planners in Karachi, they were way out of our budget. In addition, husband wasn’t keen on spending so much on decorations, his viewpoint was that the only thing people ever remember from any event is the food so we can compromise on the decorations but not the food so we decided to have the birthday at Al Habib Restaurant, Do Darya in Karachi ( with an awesome view of the sea) and for the decorations, I decided to do them myself. This blog post is to explain to all other mothers how they can do the same without breaking the bank. Continue reading How Incredibly Easily I Crafted My Daughter’s First Birthday Decorations
