Deceased But Not Shaheed: When The Government Disguises Its Shortcomings Under A Religious Label

Note: The articles under the “My Rejections” tab are those that have been rejected for publication by all major media outlets either due to topics that are too controversial, not relevant or simply because of my crappy writing.

People get killed mercilessly, are blown to ashes by a bomb blast, and are brutally murdered amid tight security and instead of lamenting the losses, our nation is quick to title the victims as Shaheed in an ironic way to appease itself. This piece discusses these five shaheeds in which we should mourn the apathy of our government and its poor security and safety for its citizens instead of consoling ourselves that the victims are shaheed and are happy in heaven.

1. The Attacks on Army Public School Peshawar

16 December 2014 was the black day when 141 students went to school and never returned home. Seven armed militants entered the Army Public School in Peshawar and opened fire on school staff and children killing an entire class and countless students. These brutally murdered children were quickly labeled as shaheed. However the terrorist attack in an army school speaks volumes about the pathetic security situation in the country. Entering a school and to be able to kill so many children is no easy task yet it was the lack of safety measures by the government that led to this sad incident but the media instead of lambasting the government started airing songs based on their shahadats.

2. Amjad Sabri

On 22 June 2016, renowned qawwal and sufi musician Amjad Sabri was brutally murdered when unknown men opened fire on his car and fled. Our media channels quickly termed his death as shahadat whereas he was the victim of poor security accorded to its citizens by the country and lack of strict action against target killers and criminals.

3. Maryam Mukthiar Tbt

The first female fighter pilot of Pakistan of Maryam Mukthiar died on 24 November 2015 when her Air Force fighter jet aircraft crashed near Kundian in Mianwali. The cause of her death was a plane crash no doubt. But this plane did not crash due to the attack of the enemy or any combat or war. She was on a routine operational training mission and the plane crashed due to a technical malfunction. These faults are nothing new and pewviously in 2014 a small two-seater Mushshak aircraft on a routine training flight crashed due to technical fault near Gujranwala killing both pilots on board and on 4 March 2015, a Pakistani Air Force Dassault Mirage 5 crashed due to adverse weather conditions on a routine training flight. Both pilots died in the crash. Although Maryam Mukthiar was a brave girl who died in the line of duty yet by labeling her as shaheed the military tried to disguise its faulty equipment.

4. Benazir Bhutto

On December 27, 2007 Pakistan’s twice reigning only female prime minister was killed while leaving a campaign rally for the PPP at Liaquat National Bagh in the run-up to the January 2008 parliamentary elections. The jialas of Benazir took to the streets and created havoc. To this day, she is called Shaheed whereas she was mercilessly killed and the government has failed to trace the culprits even a decade after her demise.

5. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged for political reasons but the PPP calls him Shaheed and to this day they run their politics based on his hanging.

6. Junaid Jamshed

Last week, a PIA aircraft PK-661 crashed enroute from Chitral to Islamabad and among the victims was the pop icon turned preacher Junaid Jamshed. On the entire media he is being termed as shaheed and all shows are focusing on his achievements and life. There is no proper coverage being given to find out the cause of the crash which is due to the sheer negligence of our aviation industry which authorized to fly an unsafe plane on a treacherous mountainous route such as Chitral. It is undeniable that Shahadat has many degrees and facets and we really don’t know what happens in the hereafter but instead of praising the shaheed status of the victims, we should mend our faults first so that no life is viciously ended.
